Sub-Mariner (1968) #14

Cover by Marie Severin

Cover Date: June 1969
On-Sale Date: March 1969

Synopsis: The Mad Thinker, Puppet Master and Egghead threaten the world with a ray that can cut off all power sources. The Sub-Mariner deals with it, as well as battling the flaming mutant Toro who has been brainwashed by the villainous trio.

CHRONOLOGICAL NOTES

Page 13

The X-Men are shown here reacting to Egghead's blackmail in their own characteristically self-pitying fashion.  They don't contribute anything else to the story.  The whole team being together (minus Angel, who is not shown) places this somewhere after X-Men (1963) #52.  The machine that Marvel Girl is operating makes it look as though they're at the mansion.

It's probably not all that important to this project, but the last panel of page 13 indicates that Captain Marvel (1968) #14 happens shortly after this story.

Page 7, panel 5

The Thinker, Puppet Master and Egghead teamed up "last month" in Avengers (1963) #63.  That story specifically begins in February, which fits my timeline perfectly.  There's no reason for me not to take the caption's "last month" comment literally, and put this story in March.

Page 9, panel 6

This issue has some flashbacks in it that I might as well add to the timeline.  The android Human Torch doesn't factor into X-Men stories all that much, but with the extreme interconnectedness of the Marvel Universe you never know when and where a character will become significant.  His origin story first appeared in Marvel Comics (1939) #1.  The Marvel Database puts the origin in November of 1939, which works for me.

Page 10, panel 2

Another flashback shows the Human Torch after being defeated by the Fantastic Four, from Fantastic Four Annual (1966) #4.  He had been reactivated by the Mad Thinker and used as a weapon.  This is the same story that gave us the first appearance of Quasimodo, who fought Cyclops and Marvel Girl in X-Men (1963) #48.  So it's important to the X-Men, I guess....?  I already have that annual placed between X-Men (1963) #27 and #28, around July of XY 1.

Page 19, panels 3 to 5

It's mentioned on page 5.4 that the Human Torch and Namor were uneasy allies, and in various other places that the Torch had many adventures with his young partner Toro.  It says above that the Torch disappeared on a lone mission in 1955.  His last solo comic was published in 1954, which fits perfectly (of course it does, this is a Roy Thomas joint).  After this, Toro got married, and was subsequently captured and brainwashed by the Mad Thinker when he attended the Torch's funeral in 1966.  This pretty much sums up the career highlights for the Torch and Toro up to this point in time.

The mention of FF Annual (1966) #4 happening in 1966 is one I'll have to ignore as a reference to  its publication date.  Sub-Mariner (1968) #14 was published in 1969, and I have it set in early XY 3.  I only have a gap of about a year-and-a-half between the two stories, which isn't enough to make the 1966 date for the annual accurate.

COUNTING THE DAYS

This story takes place over one day, probably in March.

Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #71

Cover by John Romita

Cover Date: April 1969
On-Sale Date: January 1969

Synopsis: After Toad, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch crash land, Quicksilver goes to New York to try to clear their names after siding with Magneto.  He tries and fails to capture Spider-Man, who is wanted by the police.  The two come to an understanding and part on good terms.  (Also a bunch of Spidey subplots are going on, but they're not relevant to this project.)

CHRONOLOGICAL NOTES

Page 4, panels 5 and 6

This flashback depicts the Toad, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch escaping from Magneto's island in the aftermath of Avengers (1963) #53 (technically occurring between page 20.3 and 20.4 of that issue).

(Normally I wouldn't be including appearances of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch after they become Avengers, but the Toad's an X-Men villain, and it does follow up from an X-Men story.  Besides, their next appearance is also an X-Men story.

Page 5

The flashback continues on page 5, and the first two panels of page 6, in which the trio crash their craft in the mountains, and Quicksilver decides to go to New York and explain things to the Avengers.  I've decided to place this story in December of XY 2, about three months after Avengers (1963) #53.  It's a long time for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to be flying around with the Toad, but they are wanted fugitives after helping Magneto storm the UN.

Page 7, panel 2

This story is concurrent with Avengers (1963) #62.  Because I already have Avengers (1963) #60 placed in November, this justifies the months the trio spend on the run.  Issue #62 happens while Yellowjacket and Wasp are on their honeymoon (they got married in #60), so the month after their wedding seems about right.

Page 20

Nothing is resolved for Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Toad here.  They'll be showing up in the next X-Men storyline.

COUNTING THE DAYS

This story takes place over two days, as follows:

  • Page 5.1 to 6.3 flashback: After crash-landing, Quicksilver decides to risk going to New York to seek help from the Avengers.
  • Page 1 to 9.3: Quicksilver goes to Avengers HQ, and Jarvis tells him the team is in Africa. Quicksilver sees a newspaper that says Spider-Man is wanted.
  • Page 9.4 to 20: Quicksilver tries and fails to apprehend Spider-Man. The two part on good terms.

X-Men (1963) #56

Cover by Neal Adams

Cover Date: May 1969
On-Sale Date: March 1969

FIRST STORY: "What is... the Power?"

Synopsis: The Pharaoh kidnaps Alex (again!) and seals him away. This allows him to achieve his full power as the Living Monolith, but he is defeated when Alex escapes.

CHRONOLOGICAL NOTES

Page 9

Okay, so we finally get the Pharaoh's deal, albeit couched in some flowery language.  He used to be an archaeologist, and at some point discovered he was a mutant.  Cue obsession with pharaohs, and a desire to rule the world.  Around the time that Alex's mutant powers started to awaken the Pharaoh's started to wane, and some "mutant instinct" led him to Alex.  The two of them are both powered by cosmic rays, but as long as Alex is free the Pharaoh can't achieve his full power.  (Whether this applies in reverse is unclear.)

Page 11

There's not much to discuss for this story in chronological terms, so here's an image of the Living Monolith.  He gets depowered back to his human form at the end of the issue, and next issue he'll be scooped up by the Sentinels and taken away.  He remains an occasional villain over the decades, though rarely a prominent one.

COUNTING THE DAYS:

Takes place over a single day, the same day as the end of last issue.

SECOND STORY: "The Flying A-Bomb!"

Synopsis: Angel fights the X-Men, then disposes of a bomb to prove his heroism. He is recruited into the X-Men.

CHRONOLOGICAL NOTES:

Page 2, panels 4 and 5

While the X-Men fight Angel, his downstairs neighbours complain about the noisy teenagers.  I have Angel at around 15 or 16 at this point in the timeline (December XY -2).

Page 4, panels 4 and 5

Angel notes once again that it's 1963.  As I've said before, this year is a topical reference I'm ignoring, except as an indication that all of these origins are taking place in the same year.  (If I were to count back from the publishing year, that would be a six-year gap, and would place these stories in XY -3.  I could do that, but it creates a really long gap between the recruitment of the X-Men and their first story.  I'll stick with them in XY -2 for now.)

Page 5, panel 6

Angel is recruited into the X-Men, a little over a year before X-Men (1963) #1.  Because this has to happen in Winter before the Beast's origin, which takes place on December 7th, it means that he's on the team for just a few days before their first mission against the Conquistador.

COUNTING THE DAYS

This story takes place over a single day, the same day as last issue.

LETTERS PAGE

The letters page weighs in on how old the X-Men are supposed to be at this time: Iceman is around 18, and the others are 19 or 20.  This roughly matches up to my timeline: Beast will be turning 21 a few months after this story, which puts him currently at 20.  Angel, Cyclops and Marvel Girl would all be in the 19-20 range.  Iceman is the only discrepancy, as I have his 19th birthday a few months before this issue,

We also get some guidance as to what's going on with Alex's academic career.  The editor suggests that he could have entered college during his 16th year, and completed his studies in 3 years (making him 18 or 19).  Havok never really displayed any particular academic gifts during his super-hero career, but it's just about plausible.

X-Men (1963) #55

Cover by Barry Windsor-Smith

Cover Date: April 1969
On-Sale Date: February 1969

FIRST STORY: "The Living Pharaoh!"

Synopsis: The Living Pharaoh captures Cyclops and Alex Summers, and takes them both to Egypt.  The X-Men rescue them, and Alex is revealed to be a mutant.

CHRONOLOGICAL NOTES:

Page 1

The Pharaoh reveals here that he wanted the authorities to think Cyclops had killed him.  He doesn't go into specifics about how it was accomplished, but I did my best to explain it in my last post.  I was struggling to think of why he'd go to the trouble, but I guess making Cyclops desperate enough that he'd consider serving the Pharaoh makes enough sense for this era (or it would if the Pharaoh doesn't straight up try to kill Cyclops later in the story).

Page 5, panel 4

Jean is tracking Cyclops telepathically, and she senses a mental pattern similar to his, only evil.  This is never followed up on, but it seems to me as though writer Roy Thomas may have been setting it up for Scott and the Pharaoh to be related.  Thankfully that never came to pass, and we can just chalk this up to the weird connection between the powers of Alex and the Pharaoh.  (It's revealed much later that Mr. Sinister as involved with connecting them, so maybe there's some Summers DNA floating around in the Pharaoh's makeup.)

Page 10, panel 6

The Pharaoh has been "searching and scheming" for years.  We know he thinks all the pharaohs were mutants, that he's a mutant, and that he wants to conquer the world.  Also, he wants Scott and Alex dead for reasons as yet unspecified.  It's otherwise vague what he's been doing for all that time.

COUNTING THE DAYS

This story takes place over two days, as follows.

  • Page 1 to 8: The Pharaoh takes Scott and Alex to Egypt.
  • Page 9 to 15: The X-Men rescue them, and Alex is revealed as a mutant.

SECOND STORY: "Where Angels Dare to Tread!"

Synopsis: Warren is now a crime-fighter in New York, under the name of the Angel. He stops some thieves from stealing an explosive canister, and the X-Men show up to recruit him.

CHRONOLOGICAL NOTES

Page 1

The caption says that it's Winter 1963, before the Beatles, Barbra Streisand and Spider-Man become famous.  Streisand's first album dropped in February of that year, and the Beatles had their first UK #1 in January.  The writer's intention is obviously for this story take place in January of that year, but that's not going to work for my timeline.  Angel has to debut before the Beast, who I have joining the X-Men in December, and I can't really see putting Angel's origin a full year before Beast's.  So I'm placing this story in early December, just before the Beast's origin, which still puts it in Winter.

(As with the origins of Iceman and Beast, this story is said to take place in 1963.  I've been ignoring that year as a topical reference, and only using it as an indication that all of these stories are intended to take place within the same year.)

As for Spider-Man, it's easy enough to say that his origin (in Amazing Fantasy (1962) #15) happened after this story.  As it stands, Angel's origin will be late in XY -2, a little over a year before X-Men (1963) #1, so there's plenty of room for Spidey's origin to squeeze in.

Page 2

Angel patched his own costume together, apparently, and it seems as though he put together his gas gun as well.  The gas drive him crazy later on, so he did a predictably bad job of it.  This appears to be Angel's first mission.

There's also an editor's note that the Avengers don't yet exist at this time.  Their first issue shipped concurrently with X-Men (1963) #1, so that makes sense.

Page 4, panels 1 to 3

Angel is shown here renting an apartment, inventing his gas gun, and practicing flight.  He apparently has two months until he has to go back to school, which is odd; winter break in the US is usually only a couple of weeks.  We know from X-Men (1963) #15 that Angel had to drop out of school to avoid a physical examination, so perhaps he's managed to use his wealth and influence to get a longer break than normal.  (Or maybe military schools have different breaks than everyone else, I don't know.)

Page 5, panel 6

This is the first time Angel meets any of the X-Men.  So far, every mutant that Cyke has tried to recruit has responded by trying to punch him in the face.

COUNTING THE DAYS

This story takes place over two days in early December (before the 7th).

  • Day 1:
    • Page 1 to 4.3: Angel stops some warehouse burglars.
  • Day 2:
    • Page 4.4 to 5.6: Angel stops some thieves from stealing an explosive canister from an atomic institute. The X-Men show up to recruit him.

X-Men (1963) #54

Cover by Barry Windsor-Smith

Cover Date: March 1969
On-Sale Date: January 1969

FIRST STORY: "Wanted: Dead or Alive -- Cyclops!"

Synopsis: Cyclops' younger brother Alex is kidnapped by the Living Pharaoh, a crazy guy who is obsessed with - you guessed it - Egyptian pharaohs.

CHRONOLOGICAL NOTES:

Page 2

So it turns out that Cyclops has a younger brother that he's never mentioned before.  What we have here is the first major retcon of the series (the first of many).  Cyke has already been in contact with Alex for a while, and never told the X-Men about him.  Presumably Xavier helped them reconnect after Scott came to the school.  Though come to think of it, there's no suggestion at this point that the two ever lost contact.  We know Scott's an orphan, but pretty much nothing else about his backstory.  How Alex got out of the orphanage while Scott remained is a long and convoluted tale that I'll have to deal with in time.

Alex is graduating from Landon College here, which might suggest that he's around 21.  I currently have Cyclops as 19 or 20, so that's not going to work.  Presumably he's graduating from high school.  There's a Landon School in the real world, situated in Maryland.  It's an all boys school covering grades 3-12, which fits perfectly, making Alex currently 18.

Also, it's spring.  Alex is graduating, so that would make it May.  That means there's a gap of roughly half a year between X-Men (1963) #52 and #54.  I have no idea what the X-Men are doing during this time (aside from their escapade with Blastaar in #53).  Maybe they spend some time dealing with Mesmero's army of latent mutants that vanished at the end of #52?  Maybe they stay mostly split up, as the FBI wanted them to?  Maybe the whole FBI edict goes away during this time?

Page 3, panel 1

Alex is apparently old enough to drink.  The legal drinking age in New York at the time was 18.  (It was 21 in Maryland, so I'm going to have to forget the whole Landon College thing.)

Page 4

The Living Pharaoh believes that all of Egypt's pharaohs were mutants, and that he and Alex are descended from their bloodline.  Neither of these is true (although the later introduction of Apocalypse will at least give the Pharaoh some basis for his beliefs).  The Pharaoh felt Alex's blood to call to him, whatever that means.  We'll soon learn that the two are linked, or at least that their powers are somehow connected.  The details are all a bit vague, to be honest.

Page 11

Cyclops reveals to his brother that he's a mutant for the first time.  The dude just loves keeping secrets.

COUNTING THE DAYS

This story takes place over a single day.  It begins in the middle before going into a lengthy flashback.  In chronological order, it happens as follows:

  • Page 2.4 to 12.3 flashback: The Pharaoh kidnaps Alex, and the X-Men come to his rescue. The Pharaoh returns and knocks Alex and Cyclops out.
  • Page 1 and Page 13.1: Cyclops wakes up next to the Pharaoh's dead body, and is accused of murder by the police.
  • Page 2.1 to 2.3: Cyclops flashes back to how he got into this situation.
  • Page 13.2 to 15: Cyclops escapes into the tunnels below the Pharaoh's base.

I should probably cover the whole thing with the Pharaoh's dead body here.  When Cyclops wakes up, it's lying next to him.  He speculates that Alex killed the Pharaoh, then ran away.  Later, when Cyclops encounters the Pharaoh alive again, the Pharaoh dismisses it as a ruse.  None of it particularly makes sense, but the best I can do is this:

  • Between Cyclops being knocked out and waking up, his brother does indeed knock out the Pharaoh and run into the tunnels.  As seen next issue, he's captured by the Pharaoh's goons.
  • After Cyclops knocks out the policemen, the Pharaoh gets up and runs into the tunnels as well.  Why he appeared dead is anyone's guess, and why he wanted to appear dead is an even bigger mystery.  These Arnold Drake stories don't make a lot of sense.

SECOND STORY: "The Million Dollar Angel!"

Synopsis: Warren Worthington is sent off to boarding school, where he grows wings and saves some boys from a fire.

CHRONOLOGICAL NOTES:

Page 2

This is the first part of Angel's origin story.  The first two pages depict a young-looking Warren getting into trouble, and his parents deciding to send him off to private school.  He looks about 10-12 here.

Page 3

At boarding school Warren's wings start growing.  An earlier letters page has said that his wings started growing when he was 13.  That's going to be a bit of a problem: after his wings sprout here, it's only a matter of weeks before they're fully grown.  X-Men (1963) #15 has Angel saying that he had to leave military school before taking a physical examination, so he can't stick around for long after this.  When he leaves school he goes right into the next chapter of the story, which is set immediately before he joins the X-Men.  I currently have Angel joining the team in XY -2, when he would be 15 or 16.  Maybe it was just his shoulder blades that started growing at 13, which Angel retroactively realised were his wings?  That just about works.

Page 5, panel 5

It's apparently 1963, just as it was in Iceman's origin story.  I'm taking that as a topical reference I can ignore, but it's handy to know that the writer intended these origin stories to be happening in the same year.

There's a plot set up here, with Angel's fellow students determined to learn the identity of their angelic savior, but it doesn't go anywhere.  Roy Thomas returns as the book's writer next issue, and this story takes a completely different turn.

COUNTING THE DAYS

This story takes place over some time, possibly years.

  • Page 1 to 2: Warren falls out of a tree, and is sent to private school
  • Page 3.1 to 3.3: Some time later, possibly months or years. Warren's fellow students mock him for his huge shoulder blades.
  • Page 3.4 to 3.5: Warren notices that he's growing tiny wings.
  • Page 3.6 to 5.5: Some time later (probably weeks), Warren uses his wings (and a disguise) to rescue his fellow students from a fire.

Timeline - Up to February 1969

Because of ongoing storylines, I decided to postpone updating the timeline for a few months.  It's likely that I'll tackle it this way going forward, finding story breaks that are close to the end of a year rather than doing an update every December.

Below are links to my coverage of all the issues that I'm adding to this update.  Check out the links for the various reasons I've placed things the way I have.

A COMPLETE CHRONOLOGY OF THE X-MEN (as of February 1969)

There are a lot of stories in 1968 that are significant to the Silver Age, if not to X-Men history as a whole: the "death" of Professor X, the return of Magneto, and the first appearances of Lorna Dane and Mesmero.  In terms of flashbacks it's mostly about the origin back-ups, as we round out the origin of Cyclops and add those of Iceman and Beast.

XY stands for "X-Men Year", with XY 0 being the year in which X-Men (1963) #1 occurs.  Positive numbers indicate years after that, and negative numbers years before.  Events that are tied to the sliding timescale will use the XY system, while those that aren't will use actual years.  New entries and updates to the timeline are marked in red.

EONS AGO
  • X-MEN (1963) #21 flashback: Lucifer's alien people invent the Dominus computer to enslave planets.

ABOUT 5 BILLION YEARS AGO
  • Lucifer's alien people begin enslaving worlds with the Dominus computer.

COUNTLESS YEARS AGO
  • Lucifer begins enslaving planets for his people.

30,000 to 10,000 BC
  • X-MEN (1963) #41 (1st story) flashback: A vast subterranean empire develops, fighting unending wars against their enemies. They are ignorant of the surface world, and the humans above are ignorant of them, except for the moments when their ceaseless warfare causes volcanic eruptions. (This empire is the one that will later be ruled over by Prince Gor-Tok, also known as the villain Grotesk.)

circa 500 AD
  • The Pendant of Kukulcan is created by the Mayans.

6th CENTURY AD
  • The original Black Knight has many adventures, protecting King Arthur from the ambitions of his evil nephew Modred.  (Originally depicted in Black Knight (1955) #1-5, and mentioned in Avengers (1963) #48.)
  • A mutant with great powers of hypnotism impersonates Merlin the Magician in the court of King Arthur. After a time he decides to put himself into suspended animation to survive the coming centuries.
  • The former Roman Emperor known as Tyrannus is banished from the surface world by Merlin. (I assume this is the real Merlin, not the fake one who becomes the Warlock/Maha Yogi.)

circa 900 AD
  • The power of Kukulcan is misused, creating a volcanic eruption that engulfs a city.  After this, the pendant is broken into two pieces.  This is the last time Kukulcan manifests on Earth for 1,000 years.  (The date of the volcanic eruption is conjecture, as is using that event to explain why the pendant was broken. It all ties together very well with the date for when Kukulcan last walked the Earth, though, and it also coincides with the beginning of the decline of Mayan civilisation.)

circa 999 AD
  • The evil deity Cyttorak is driven from Earth. He leaves behind the curse of the Juggernaut in his temple, in the form of a ruby, and sets his demonic servant Xorak to guard it.  The temple will be spoken of in legend for centuries to come.  (The date for this comes from the Marvel Database; I think they get it from the "Eighth Day" crossover, published in 1999.  Cyttorak is probably banished much earlier than this, but I can't find a time reference for it.)

circa 1450 AD
  • X-MEN (1963) #33 flashback: The Ancient One banishes the demon Xorak to the Crimson Cosmos inside the Ruby of Cyttorak.

1546 AD
  • The Mayans are conquered by the Spanish. The power of the Pendant of Kukulcan will lie dormant for over 400 years.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR (1775 to 1783)
  • A network of tunnels beneath what will become the Xavier Estate in Westchester is used by the British to store ammunition during the Revolutionary War.  (The Super-Adaptoid will later use this as a hideout.)

circa 1815 AD
  • X-MEN (1963) #40 (1st story) page 15.5 flashback: Aliens from a tropical planet visit Earth. They build a robot and send it down to the planet to test humanity's levels of understanding. The android goes berserk, and becomes a menace. The aliens chase it north into the polar regions, where the cold renders it inert.

1816 AD, Summer
  • Inspired by stories of the alien android that went berserk one year prior, Mary Shelley begins writing the novel Frankenstein.

1920 AD
  • X-MEN (1963) #44 (1st story) flashback: A plane crash-lands in the domain of the Bird People.  The only survivor is a baby that the Bird People decide to raise as their own. (This baby will grow up to be the Red Raven.)

1940 AD
  • X-MEN (1963) #44 (1st story) flashback: On his 21st birthday, Red Raven realises that he is not the same as the Bird People who raised him.  He tries to convince them to leave humanity in peace.  (After this I assume he has the adventures depicted in Red Raven (1940) #1.)

1948 AD
  • X-MEN (1963) #44 (1st story) flashback: Red Raven is unable to convince the Bird People not to go to war with humanity.  He puts them in suspended animation and sinks their domain beneath the ocean.

1962 AD
  • X-MEN (1963) #41 flashback: The subterranean empire of Prince Gor-Tok is destroyed by underground atomic tests.  Gor-Tok gathers his people, who are slowly killed by radiation until he is the only survivor.  (Presumably it takes years for his people to all die off, and he wanders for a long time on his own.)

BEFORE CHARLES XAVIER IS BORN
  • Kurt Marko is married.
  • Cain Marko is born.  (His age isn't given, but he definitely looks older than Charles.)
  • Kurt Marko's wife presumably dies some time between Cain's birth and Kurt remarrying in XY -23.

XY -32 or -33
  • Charles Xavier is born.  This assumes Charles is 32 in XY 0.

XY -23
  • Charles Xavier's parents work on the first A-bomb project. This will become topical over time, but it's still useful as a guide to when they were alive. I've placed this assuming that they worked on the Manhattan Project.
  • Brian Xavier dies in an atomic explosion at Alamagordo, New Mexico. Kurt Marko had the chance to save him, but chose not to.
  • X-MEN (1963) #12 flashback: Charles attends his father's funeral, where his mother Sharon is comforted by Kurt Marko.
  • Months after the funeral, Kurt Marko marries Sharon Xavier.
  • X-MEN (1963) #12 flashback: Kurt Marko moves into the Xavier mansion.

XY -22
  • Cain Marko is expelled from school.
  • X-MEN (1963) #12 flashback: Kurt's marriage to Sharon Xavier has gone sour. Cain Marko moves into the Xavier mansion, and starts bullying Charles immediately.
  • Sharon Xavier dies.
  • X-MEN (1963) #12 flashback: After an argument with Cain, Kurt Marko dies in a lab accident. He saves Cain and Charles before he dies, and tells Charles that he knows about his special power.
  • Charles realises that he can read minds.

XY -19
  • Charles Xavier starts losing his hair in his early teens.
  • X-MEN (1963) #12 flashback: Charles Xavier uses his telepathy to read his teacher's mind.  This placement assumes that he is 32 in XY 0, and 13 here.
  • X-MEN (1963) #49 (2nd story) page 1 to 5.2: Norton McCoy and Edna Andrews are married. Norton gets a job at a nuclear power plant, and later saves the plant from going into meltdown.  After months of recovery, they move to a new town, and Edna falls pregnant.

XY -18
  • X-MEN (1963) #49 (2nd story) page 5.3 to 5.6: Hank McCoy is born (probably in June or July). This assumes that he turns 18 in XY 0.
  • One of Angel, Cyclops or Marvel Girl is born two months after Beast, around August or September.  I would have this as Cyclops, but it's unconfirmed.
  • Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are possibly born around this time, although their ages have yet to be confirmed. Quicksilver is older than the Scarlet Witch.

XY -18 or -17
  • One of Angel, Cyclops or Marvel Girl is born at some point between two months to a year after Beast. I would have this as Angel, but its unconfirmed in the comics.

XY -17
  • X-MEN (1963) #12 flashback: Charles Xavier excels at various sports. Cain gets mad about it, and Charles has to knock him out to defend himself.
  • One of Angel, Cyclops or Marvel Girl is born a year after Beast (around June).  I would have this as Marvel Girl, but it's unconfirmed in the comics.

XY -16
  • January: Iceman is born.
  • X-MEN (1963) #12 flashback: Cain drives Charles to college after vacation (probably August or September), and the two of them almost die in a car crash.
  • Lorna Dane is born. Weeks later her parents die in a plane crash. She is adopted by her father's sister.  The family never tells her that they are not her real parents. (This assumes that Lorna is the same age as Iceman, being 18 in her first appearance in XY 2.)

XY -15
  • X-MEN (1963) #50 (2nd story), page 1: Hank McCoy is an exceptionally strong and agile toddler.  (This assumes he is 3 here, and turns 18 in XY 0.)

XY -14
  • Cain Marko and Charles Xavier serve together in Korea.
  • X-MEN (1963) #12 flashback: Cain deserts under fire, and finds the Temple of Cyttorak, where a ruby transforms him into the Juggernaut. He is buried underneath tons of rubble.
    • Flashbacks to this event include: X-Men (1963) #32

BEFORE XY -10
  • X-MEN (1963) #21 flashback: Lucifer lords it over an enslaved people on a planet orbiting Sirius.

XY -10

  • X-MEN (1963) #5, page 1 to 9.1 (late March):  The X-Men return safely to the mansion.  Marvel Girl's parents stop in for a visit on their way to the World Fair. The Brotherhood are still searching for the X-Men without success. (This is just outside of the April to October timespan for the New York World Fair, but the months-long gap between Strange Tales (1951) #120 and Fantastic Four (1961) #28 means I had to push it back slightly. Maybe Jean's parents are planning to stay in New York for a week or two.)
  • X-MEN (1963) #5, page 9.2 to 24 (next day): The X-Men fight Magneto and the Brotherhood in Manhattan, and then on Asteroid M. Asteroid M is destroyed. Professor X reveals that the X-Men have passed their final exam, and that he never really lost his powers.

XY 0, April
  • Mad Thinker begins studying the X-Men, and trying to discover the identity of Professor X. (My conjecture is that he does this using footage and photos of the battle with the Vanisher from X-Men (1963) #2.)

XY 0, May
  • JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY (1952) #109 (1st story) (early May): Magneto fights Thor in a sub in the New York harbor, while the X-Men fight the Brotherhood in Manhattan.
    • AVENGERS (1963) #16 flashback: The X-Men chase Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch through New York. This doesn't match any of the X-Men/Brotherhood battles we've seen, so I'm placing it as part of the off-page battle in Journey Into Mystery (1952) #109.
    • X-MEN (1963) #37 flashback: Marvel Girl and Iceman beat up Mastermind.  Again, these flashbacks don't match anything we've seen, so I'm placing them in Journey Into Mystery (1952) #109.
  • FANTASTIC FOUR (1961) #28 (next day): The Mad Thinker and the Puppet Master take control of Professor X, and manipulate the X-Men into attacking the Fantastic Four. (There's meant to be a several month gap between this and Strange Tales (1951) #120, but I've had to shorten it to two months, from March to May.)
  • Professor X erects psychic shields so that his mind can't be controlled again.
  • X-MEN (1963) #6 flashback (early May): A freighter gets too close to Magneto's island, so he hurls it away with his giant magnet.

  • X-MEN (1963) #7, page 6.4 to 22 (next day): Magneto recruits the Blob, and they fight the X-Men.  Blob eventually gets sick of fighting and goes back to the carnival.

  • X-MEN (1963) #8, page 1 to 7.3 (mid-late May): Iceman and Beast are chased by an angry mob. Beast quits the team. This takes place over one day in mid-late May.
  • One week later, Beast debuts as a wrestler. He very quickly becomes a top-draw heel in the WWWF. (It's implausibly quick, to be honest, but there's a reference in X-Men (1963) #20 that means this story has to happen before mid-June.)

XY 0, June
  • X-MEN (1963) #8, page 7.4 to 20 (June 6th): After wrestling Unus, Beast helps the X-Men defeat him. This happens on June 6th, because it has to be on the same day as a WWWF show at Madison Square Garden in 1964.
    • Flashbacks to this story are in: X-Men (1963) #37

XY 0, July
  • Conjecture: Due to his criminal activities, Unus is pressured by the WWWF into dropping the championship. This happens on July 11th.
  • The X-Men release the first official photos of Magneto and his Brotherhood to the media. (My conjecture is that they do this as a reaction to the anti-mutant mob that chased Beast and Iceman in X-Men (1963) #8.)

  • Professor X buys a private jet.

XY 1, May
